The Science of Play: Milestones 6–12 Months

Between 6 and 12 months, play becomes much more intentional. Your baby is no longer just reacting to the world, they are trying to influence it. Here’s how our collection supports the major developmental leaps occurring during this stage:

  • 6–9 Months: Sitting, Reaching & Object Permanence As babies learn to sit unassisted, their hands are freed for more complex tasks. This is the perfect time for stacking cups and nesting toys, which teach size relationships and hand-eye coordination. You’ll also notice them looking for toys they’ve dropped - a sign they are developing object permanencePop-up toys and peek-a-boo books are fantastic for reinforcing this cognitive milestone.
  • 9–10 Months: The Pincer Grasp & Fine Motor Skills Around this age, babies move from using their whole hand to using their thumb and forefinger (the pincer grasp). Shape sortersbead mazes and toys with small knobs or dials provide the perfect workout for these tiny muscles, laying the foundation for self-feeding and eventually, writing.
  • 10–12 Months: Cruising, Language & Cause-and-Effect Whether they are commando crawling or cruising along the sofa, babies at this stage love toys that move. Push-along wagons and rolling wooden animals encourage gross motor development and core strength. This is also the noisy stage! Musical instruments like drums and xylophones help babies understand cause-and-effect: "If I hit this, it makes a sound."

A Note on Safety: At this age, everything is still explored with the mouth. We ensure all our 6–12 month toys are made from non-toxic, durable materials like sustainable FSC wood and food-grade silicone, meeting all Australian Safety Standards (AS/NZS ISO 8124).
